Sara likes to play make-believe. Sometimes, she's a dancer. Sometimes, she's a baker, and sometimes

she's a salesperson. But more than anything, she loves to be a firefighter. She has a helmet and a hose.

She puts out fires and rescues her dolls. One day, Sara's teacher asked the class, "What do you want to

be?" Sara raised her hand. "I want to be a firefighter," she said. "You can't be a firefighter," said Robby.

"You're a girl." Sara looked sad, but Mrs. Smith said, "You can be whatever you want to be!"

The Game

Every Saturday, we wake up to salsa tunes. We watch cartoons. We have pancakes or cereal for breakfast, with milk and a glass of grape juice. Then, when we have finished, we run out into the yard to have some fun.

But one Saturday, Mommy Grace had other plans for us. She said that sisters and I had to help her with certain chores. We had to help her wash our clothes!

We came up with another plan, a better one! We would turn doing laundry into a challenging game.

“OK,” said Gertrude, my oldest sister. “You have to close your eyes and pick out matching clothes from the pile. The one who picks out the most matching pieces wins.”

“Another thing,” Gertrude continued, “remember, the winner receives a prize.” Cathy, my second oldest sister, and I agreed. Gertrude was a genius!

Gertrude closed her eyes. She reached out and began to pick out clothes. As if by magic, she picked out matching dresses! “This one is red. This one is blue. This is green,” she said.

Then it was my turn. I picked out some socks. “This sock is white. This sock is black. This sock is brown.” I said.

Cathy worked faster than I did. In a few seconds, she had gathered all the pants and t-shirts!

We had so much fun with our new game! In my next turn, I matched jeans, skirts, and blouses. I made funny combinations: striped shirts with shirts with black spot, khaki pants with washed-out jeans, and socks of all colors.

Cathy worked harder than I did. And was she glad for that! She made even funnier combinations: Dad’s gray pant with his striped pants; Dad’s gold t-shirt with Mom’s purple blouse. The perfect combination to dress a clown!

When Gertrude announced that we were beginning the final round, I got a little nervous. When the game finally ended, Cathy had won!

I was a little upset at first. After a while, though, I forgot about the competition. My sisters and I celebrated Cathy’s victory!

Mommy Grace called Cathy and said, “You have worked well and conscientiously. You deserve a special prize: a big, cold glass of lemonade with candy and a piece of chocolate cake! For the rest of you, I have gingerbread cookies.” We were very happy. After all, we were all winners.
