Earth is called "the blue planet". Do you know why? From space, Earth looks blue because it has a lot of water. Water exists in three states. Water can be a solid. Think of ice and snow. Water can be a liquid. This is the water we can drink. Water can also be a gas. We call this vapor or steam.

Every living thing on earth contains water. An elephant is 70 percent water; a tomato is 90 percent water; mice and people are 65 percent water.

Helen Keller

When Helen Keller was born in Alabama, USA, in 1880, she, was a healthy child. At the age of nineteen months, she became very sick with a high fever. This illness left her deaf and blind; afterward, she couldn't hear or see. As she grew up, the girl was very angry and behaved badly, breaking things and hitting people. She made up signs with her hands and body as a way of communicating, but life was very difficult.

When Helen was almost seven, she met her teacher, Anne Sullivan, for the first time. Anne came to live with Helen and her family and used her finger to spell words, like "cake" and "doll", onto Helen's hand. Helen could repeat these actions, but she didn't quite understand them. Then, one day, Anne and Helen were at the water pump, and as Anne put Helen's hand under the water, she spelled "w-a-t-e-r" onto her hand.

At last, Helen understood! She was very excited and learned words quickly after that. She learned to read Braille, which is a system of raised dots, like a code, for letters. By touching people's lips and throats, she learned how to understand what they were saying.

Helen became famous for her incredible achievements. She went to the university and used to give talks with Anne about her life. She also performed in shows and wrote a book. The movie of her life is called "The Miracle Worker". She raised money all over the world to help other blind people.
